In addition to the rigorous academic prep that KIPP offers, KIPP Through College programs offer a range of services and implement them in unique ways based on local student needs.
From day one in a KIPP school, college is the focus; college banners line the school hallways and classes are identified by the year those KIPP students are projected to go to college. KIPP focuses on college and career awareness in part through field lessons and off-campus activities. As eighth grade approaches, the supports include applying to competitive high schools and for financial aid, and offering high school transition classes. Because we are committed to supporting them early on, KTC begins tracking students upon successful eighth grade completion to ensure our students have the necessary supports to persist.
The focus on college is even more keen and intentional when students begin high school. KIPP students prepare for college by taking SAT/ACT prep classes, AP classes, leadership workshops, summer programs, frequent visits to colleges and universities, and enrichment activities, all of which are in addition to their rigorous college-prep curriculum. By senior year, many have already planned out their college essays, have letters of recommendation in hand, and know exactly to which colleges they’ll be applying.
KTC not only supports students on their journey to college, but also supports them while they work towards college graduation. KTC counselors visit students on their college campuses, as well as keep in touch via email and phone. Counselors discuss academic progress, financial aid, social pressures, and internship and career options. During holidays and breaks, KIPP hosts events for KIPPsters while they are back in their hometowns. At graduation, KIPP students reflect on their hard work and often credit their teachers and KTC counselors for their support. In addition to the rigorous academic prep that KIPP offers, KIPP Through College programs offer a range of services and implement them in unique ways based on local student needs.
Helping a student get to and through college is a huge achievement, but providing students throughout high school and college with the information and support mechanisms to have a successful post-collegiate career is the ultimate accomplishment and reward. A growing number of KTC programs provide programming such as career readiness workshops, job shadow days, networking events with professionals, resume building support, career roundtables, internship application support, and individual counseling. Offering career services is the completion of a comprehensive approach to ensure that KIPP is delivering on the promises that we make to all KIPP students.
KIPP is committed to equal treatment for all individuals. KIPP does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, gender, disability, age, religion, sexual orientation, or national or ethnic origin.
