KIPP Through College in Action

Across the country, KTC programs are developing innovative initiatives for both KIPP students and alumni to gain the essential skills necessary to succeed in the competitive world after college. Here are a few examples.

KTC NYC has developed the College Scholars program for KIPP students attending higher education institutions in the city. KTC Scholars receive tutoring in a variety of subject areas, including writing support from college-level faculty. The program offers guidance in the areas of: course registration, major concentration selection, financial aid, as well as internship and career-related opportunities. Students attend monthly workshops in order to receive semester stipends. The program, which often serves students who are enrolled at community college or who need more preparation before tackling college-level work, offers a quiet study area away from home or other distractions. At the completion of the 12-week program, each KTC Scholar who fulfills all requirements receives an academic stipend.

The KTC program at KIPP Houston has built a strong alumni network through their KIPP Alumni Association. KTC staff work with and advocate for their 1,053 (and growing) college-aged KIPPsters to ensure they feel empowered to leverage the opportunities necessary to make them career-ready. Beyond hosting career-readiness workshops, advocacy days, and social mixers, the Alumni Association also manages KIPP Houston’s college and corporate partnerships and, best of all, celebrates fellow KIPP alumni’s personal, academic, and professional accomplishments.

KIPP DC has implemented a career readiness program called Future Focus in which nearly 40 of their high school sophomores and juniors collaborated with volunteers from Accenture and other locally-based corporations to gain essential workforce skills training, career coaching, and experiential learning. KIPPsters were selected to take part in a nine-month career readiness curriculum which included college credit and a paid internship. Sessions covered everything from sharpening your resume and honing interview skills to tackling professional dress and examining finances. One student said, “Because of Future Focus, I feel more confident when I’m speaking and presenting. Since we learned about professionalism and presentation skills in Future Focus, I was much more prepared and confident in my ability to present in front of the DC Youth City Council.”

The KTC team in Los Angeles created a distinctive Job Shadow program for alumni to gain critical, hands-on career readiness experience and exposure to a myriad of professional fields. More than 50 alumni participated in two training sessions, a full day job shadow with an LA area professional, and the cornerstone event - an evening “Mocktail Party.” The party was undoubtedly the highlight of the entire program, as it was a unique chance for students to build their networking skills and discuss their academic and occupational interests.

KIPP Bay Area Schools hosts an Alumni Summit each year, which is a day-long event to promote college readiness/access and college persistence among alumni and eighth graders from the region’s seven schools. Students and alumni can participate in sessions such as transitioning to high school, choosing a college, paying for college, and preparing for community college. A college fair on site provides KIPP students with an opportunity to speak to college admissions representatives. In recent years, this program has drawn up to 150 students and alumni seeking essential college knowledge. In follow-up surveys, 97 percent of participants found their Summit experience to be good or excellent in preparing them for college.

Every Wednesday night from 6 to 8 p.m., KIPP Austin hosts Wednesday Night Connections to increase face-to-face contact with alumni. In addition to creating a regular, expected meeting time, it gives KIPP Austin the opportunity to host workshops and events during a time many alumni have already budgeted to spend with KIPP. Wednesday Night Connections provides alumni with the following services: college and scholarship application help, test prep, tutoring and homework help, computer and printer access, financial aid assistance, a supportive alumni community, and workshops (scholarship, essay writing, financial aid, college selection).
