Statement from Rich Buery on the Justice in Policing Act of 2020
We applaud Representative Bass (D-CA), Senator Booker (D-NJ) and Senator Harris(D-CA), and the many other co-sponsors, for introducing the Justice in Policing Act of 2020. Our country is long overdue for a fundamental change in the role of police and policing. We must ensure that the students and families we serve can live and thrive free from police violence and brutality, and benefit from the equal protection of the laws guaranteed by the Constitution We also appreciate Senator Scott (R-SC) for introducing his legislation in the Senate that calls for many of the same reforms.
Our students deserve to live in country where they can live and thrive with dignity, free from overly aggressive law enforcement practices. They deserve to know that in America, Black Lives Matter. We urge Congress to work in a bi-partisan manner to ensure that Black and Brown Americans feel safe when interacting with the police and that law enforcement officers that abandon their oath of office to protect and serve are held accountable.
