Statement From Shavar Jeffries on FAFSA Notification Delay

I’m alarmed to learn that last-minute FAFSA delays may prevent colleges from notifying students about financial aid awards before they are expected to decide which school they will attend. This uncertainty will especially harm first-generation students and those least able to afford college, discouraging them from choosing more selective colleges where they are more likely to graduate. The Department of Education must work with all deliberate speed to get FAFSA data to colleges so they can release award letters well before early May. Our students’ futures depend on the Department’s ability to quickly remedy this situation.
