What are the requirements for teaching at a KIPP school?
KIPP is always looking for excellent teachers! The primary requirement for teaching at a KIPP school is a belief in a very simple concept: that we will do whatever it takes to help each and every student develop the character and academic skills necessary for them to lead self-sufficient, successful and happy lives.
Our faculty consists of veteran public school teachers, individuals pursuing second careers, and people straight out of college. Many of our schools look for candidates with at least two years of prior teaching experience. However, several KIPP schools have teaching residency or fellowship programs designed for candidates who do not have experience in the classroom.
For more information about the requirements to teach at a specific KIPP school, please visit the school's individual website, which you can find in our school directory. Please note that to be considered for a teaching position at a KIPP school, you must have legal authorization to work in the United States.
Do I need a credential to teach at a KIPP school? Does KIPP certify teachers? KIPP schools comply with any applicable state and federal laws, and certification requirements for charter school teachers vary by state. Some KIPP schools may have partnerships with local education institutions or programs that assist teachers in working towards certification, but this varies by school. Please check with the individual school you are interested in for more information on certification requirements.
What is the experience and background of a typical KIPP teacher? KIPP teachers are the heart and soul of KIPP schools and their "do whatever it takes" attitude is the main reason for KIPP's enduring success. There are more than 1,500 KIPP teachers working every day to instill in our students the knowledge, skills and character to succeed in college and the competitive world beyond. While their experience and backgrounds are varied and wide, each shares the fundamental conviction that all children can and will learn. KIPP teachers are a diverse group, including both experienced teachers from other public and private schools serving underserved students and career changers. The experience of KIPP teachers extends from first-year teachers to 35-year classroom veterans, but they are all committed to the KIPP mission and philosophy. Across our network, nearly 40 percent of our teachers are African American or Latino, about 30 percent are Teach For America alumni, and more than 35 percent hold master's degrees.
KIPP teachers are expected to work hard. How does KIPP prevent burn out and teacher turnover? KIPP teachers are expected to help all students succeed, and they typically work a nine-hour work day during the week, half days on selected Saturdays, and three weeks in the summer. They also are available via cell phone for homework help in the evening. To compensate for the additional time required to teach in a KIPP school, KIPP teachers typically receive a higher salary than the average teacher in neighboring public schools. KIPP puts a high priority on collaboration and professional development, and the extended school day gives KIPP teachers time for lesson planning and sharing ideas. The KIPP Foundation provides regular training and professional development throughout the year to help teachers exchange lesson plans and gain new skills to improve their classroom practice. How can I apply for a teaching job with KIPP? Please visit our Careers page to see a list of current teaching opportunities around the country. For more information on the application process for teaching jobs, please click here or visit the website of the individual KIPP school or region you are considering. Where can I find more information on the KIPP school curriculum? KIPP schools adhere to a shared set of operating principles known as the Five Pillars, but each locally-run school designs and implements its own curriculum to address the needs of its students. Are you planning to open a KIPP school in [city / state]? Why not? In order to focus on the growth within our current regions and to provide needed targeted support to our current new cities, KIPP is not currently selecting new cities for expansion. However, many of our existing KIPP regions do plan to expand over the next few years. Please check the school directory for updates on our plans to open new KIPP schools.
