Teaching the hardest working students requires the hardest working teachers. For students to catch up academically at an accelerated rate, teachers must do whatever it takes to meet every student where they are and help them reach their fullest potential.
- Students and teachers are in school from 7:30 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. on weekdays, for four hours on Saturdays, and for three to four weeks during the summer. In spite of the long hours, average daily attendance at KIPP Schools is 96%.
- Students complete between two and three hours of homework each night.
- Students, parents, and teachers sign a Commitment to Excellence form that confirms their commitment to the school and to each other towards achieving success.
- Teachers design lessons that meet the needs of students at their level, and then raise everyone to the next level. Learning is made fun through songs, poetry, interactive lessons, and hands-on experiences. There is also teamwork, discipline, respect, recognition, and rewards.
- Teachers receive ongoing professional development, not only locally, but also nationally, with other high-performing KIPP Schools.
- Rigorous college preparatory instruction is balanced with extracurricular activities like martial arts, music, chess, and sports.
- The school year culminates with high quality experiential field lessons to national parks, historically significant regions, and college campuses.
The rewards of this hard work are endless. KIPP teachers ensure that students in educationally underserved communities receive a college-preparatory education. KIPP teachers thrive on being part of a relentless team that fosters a culture of personal and academic excellence. This culture of high expectations does not happen in just one classroom; it permeates the entire building and results in a high quality public education.
