Students are center of education, but voices rarely heard in ILEA debates

Indianapolis students are sharing their thoughts on the recent proposals put forward by the Indianapolis Local Education Alliance, which could drastically shift how students receive and education and where in coming years.

Students from Shortridge High School on the city’s north side and KIPP Legacy High School, a charter school on the city’s east side, told IndyStar their thoughts on the proposals.

The alliance is set to take its final vote on what recommendations they’ll send to lawmakers at 6 p.m. Dec. 17, 2025, at the City-County Building, 200 E. Washington St.

Most of the students shared similar viewpoints, like ensuring that the elected school board’s power is retained, and a desire to have student voices more involved in the conversation affecting their schools.

Their main priority, they said, is getting a good education, and none really cared about the traditional vs charter school debate.
