High schoolers receive chance to learn about medical field by shadowing Ascension St. John doctors

TULSA, Okla. — Students shadowing doctors at Ascension St. John are getting more than a behind-the-scenes tour. Instead, they’re gaining hands-on exposure to the realities of working in health care.

“The goal is to continue to educate them,” said Dr. Angela Surratt, the Workforce Development Manager for the Oklahoma market at Ascension St. John. “This is just the first step in getting them that opportunity to really understand the workforce and health care culture.”

For these students, the experience includes observing surgeries, interacting with patients and learning what daily life looks like for physicians, an opportunity that doctors say can be lifechanging.

Dr. Tyler Auschwitz, a neurosurgeon at Ascension St. John, said the hospital partners with Genesys Works, an outreach program that allows students to shadow during the semester.
