KIPP DC, Starbucks host backpack giveaway for students in Southeast

WASHINGTON (7News) — Hundreds of families gathered Saturday in Southeast D.C. for a community-wide backpack giveaway hosted by KIPP DC Public Schools and Starbucks’ “All In” initiative.
The event took place from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at KIPP DC Legacy College Preparatory in the 3900 block of 8th Street, Southeast. Organizers anticipated between 500 and 700 attendees for the giveaway.
More than 1,000 backpacks were distributed to D.C. students ahead of the start of the new school year. The event also featured free food and drinks, a tech raffle, hygiene kits, games, a live DJ, and activities for kids.
According to organizers, between 50 and 75 volunteers from Starbucks, Howard University, and Trinity University participated, along with more than a dozen community partners, including Martha’s Table, DC Central Kitchen, USO, Safe Shorts, D.C. Fire and EMS, Deaf Reach, and the Metropolitan Police Department.
