Brittany Buchanan, a dedicated 9th grade AP Human Geography teacher at KIPP University Prep in San Antonio, Texas, is honored with the 2024 Harriett Ball Excellence in Teaching Award. This award recognizes outstanding teachers from the KIPP network. The winning teachers, nominated by their school leaders, were recognized for their leadership and dedication to improving outcomes for students.
Ms. Buchanan’s joy is infectious, and her class is among the most engaging at KIPP University Prep thanks to her vibrant teaching presence and dedication to planning. Students are constantly making connections to real world applications using critical thinking skills. She empowers students to apply scaffolds and stretch for more challenges. After consistently achieving 95%+ on the state history exam, she chose to take on teaching more challenging course work to expand access and achievement to AP.
Ms. Buchanan has recently been named a National Board Certified Teacher. Her student survey results are consistently above average for important indicators like "my teacher makes learning interesting" and "my teacher makes me want to do my best.”
