Three Silicon Valley schools were among the top 100 public high schools in the nation while local schools ruled among STEM institutions, according to a new survey out Wednesday from U.S. News & World Report.

KIPP San Jose Collegiate placed the best among area schools, coming in at No. 60. The other two in the national top 100 were Mission San Jose High School in Fremont at No. 88 and University Preparatory Academy Charter in San Jose at No. 93.

All three of those schools ranked well among California public high schools: KIPP San Jose at No. 4, Mission San Jose at No. 8, and University Prep at No. 9.

Elsewhere on the state-specific list: Monta Vista High School in Cupertino came in at No. 13, Summit Preparatory Charter High in Redwood City came in at No. 16, Lynbrook High School in San Jose was No. 17, Dr. T.J. Owens Gilroy Early College Academy in Gilroy was No. 23, and Saratoga High School in Saratoga was No. 26.

To create the lists, U.S. News & World Report reviewed more than 20,500 public high schools based on whether or not they exceeded expectations in their states, whether or not underserved students exceeded the state average, whether or not student graduation rates were higher than 80 percent and whether or not students were prepared for college-level coursework.

The publication also ranked STEM, charter and magnet schools. And with the STEM list, local institutions schooled the rest, with nine area high schools showing up in the top 30 STEM schools across the United States:

  • No. 7: Monta Vista
  • No. 9: Saratoga
  • No. 11: Henry M. Gunn High School in Palo Alto
  • No. 16: Lynbrook
  • No. 18: Mission San Jose
  • No. 25: Palo Alto High School
  • No 26: Homestead High School in Cupertino
  • No. 27: Cupertino High School
  • No. 30: Los Gatos High School

Among charter schools nationally, KIPP San Jose ranked best at No. 21 (the second-best showing among California schools) while with magnet schools, Mission San Jose was the top ranked California school and came in at No. 23 on the national list.
