Statement From Richard Buery on Proposed CARES Act Final Rule

Yesterday, the Department of Education proposed a final rule that would leave hundreds of thousands of students without the necessary emergency relief under the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act. Contrary to the spirit of the law, the rule limits access for our most vulnerable –DREAMERS, undocumented students, many student veterans, and students who were unable to maintain their grades in the midst of an international pandemic—have now been ruled ineligible. Many of our KIPP students depend on the access to higher education to open doors to opportunity so they can become our future leaders and this unnecessarily harmful rule would kill that dream.
