KIPP Speaks Out in Defense of the
U.S. Department of Education’s School Discipline Guidance

New York, NY – December 18, 2018 – Rich Buery, Chief of Policy and Public Affairs at the KIPP Foundation, issued the following statement in response to a report by the Federal School Safety Commission of the U.S. Department of Education recommending the rescission of the guidance on school discipline.

“Today, the Federal School Safely Commission recommended the rescission of the school discipline guidance issued jointly in 2014 by the U.S. Department of Education and U.S. Department of Justice. This is critical guidance aimed to encourage fair school discipline policies and reduce disparities in disciplinary response based on race and disability. We know that students are harmed when schools have exclusionary disciplinary practices. The KIPP Foundation joins with dozens of other organizations to urge the Department of Education to maintain the current guidance. At KIPP, we are committed to restorative justice practices and other nondiscriminatory approaches that foster safe and nurturing learning environments for students who attend our public charter schools.”
