KIPP Condemns the Department of Education's Rescission of the School Discipline Guidance
New York, NY—December 21, 2018—Rich Buery, Chief of Policy and Public Affairs at the KIPP Foundation, issued the following statement in response to today’s decision by the U.S. Department of Education to rescind the school discipline guidance.
“Today the administration rescinded the 2014 school discipline guidance issued jointly by the U.S. Department of Education and U.S. Department of Justice. Rescinding the guidance sends the wrong message about the Federal government’s commitment to protecting the Civil Rights of students of color and students with disabilities. We join hundreds of partner organizations in condemning this decision and emphasizing that despite the rescission of the guidance, all students still have legal protections from discriminatory practices. At KIPP, we will continue to be committed to respecting the rights of our students and implementing non-discriminatory policies and practices that foster safe and nurturing learning environments.”
