Atalia Castro, 2017-18
KIPP Houston Public Schools Alumna
Atalia was born in Morelia, Mexico and immigrated to the United States at the age of 8. She attended KIPP Academy Middle School in Houston and then went on to the High School for Performing and Visual Arts where her focus was dance and theater. She graduated from HSPVA and went on to pursue a degree in Child Development and Family Studies with a minor in Dance at Stephen F. Austin State University. In 2014 she began working at Houston’s biggest homeless shelter Star of Hope as the Senior Children’s Service Worker, where she advocated on behalf of children and their families for higher educational opportunities while ensuring they received support and necessary services. In 2015, she was promoted and now manages the children’s programs where she leads a team of 18 to provide childcare services, after school programs, tutoring, and counseling for the children at the shelter. Atalia is currently pursuing a certification in Biblical Counseling from the College of Biblical Studies. She was also the keynote speaker for KSS in 2015 and for the KIPP Houston Annual Dinner in 2017. She enjoys public speaking, especially when she gets an opportunity to be a voice for dreamers and the immigrant community.
