KIPP Leadership Programs

Beyond classroom teaching, KIPP School Leadership Programs provide opportunities for teachers to follow unique paths to leadership. These programs are broken up into two categories, Leadership Programs for current KIPP schools and Fellowship Programs to found new KIPP schools. Each program is unique, tailored to the roles of the participant and built upon the KIPP Leadership Competency Model.

Leadership Programs

Leadership Programs cultivate a team of new leaders including succession leaders, emerging leaders, and teacher leaders, to ensure the quality of education within a school over the long term.

Principal Prep Program

Principal Prep participants engage in a year-long leadership development program aimed to prepare successor leaders to lead and manage a highly effective KIPP school. In addition to five weeks of intensive training and coursework in a university setting, participants have an opportunity to pursue an M.A. in educational leadership and an administrative credential through KIPP's partnership with National-Louis University.

Throughout the school year, programming continues with nine days of workshops led by education experts, optional residency opportunities, participation on a School Quality Review and monthly professional development calls.

Leadership Team Program

The Leadership Team Program is designed for emerging leaders in roles such as Assistant Principal, Dean of Instruction, Dean of Culture, and High School/College Placement Staff. Participants engage in a year-long leadership development program to enhance and expand knowledge and skills while maximizing leadership potential. In addition to five weeks of intensive training and coursework in a university setting, participants have an opportunity to pursue an M.A. in educational leadership and an administrative credential through KIPP's partnership with National-Louis University.

Throughout the school year, participants attend three weekend trainings including six full days of professional development based on Research for Better Teaching (RBT).

Teacher Leader Program

Designed exclusively for KIPP teachers in roles such as Grade-level Chair, Department/Content Chair, Saturday School Coordinator or Field Lesson Coordinator, the Teacher Leader Program is an opportunity for teachers to hone their exceptional instructional skills while maximizing their leadership potential.

Each participant, in collaboration with their school leader, picks one of two strands: strand 1 focuses on Research for Better Teaching's Studying Skillful Teaching while strand 2 focuses on team leadership and management.

Fellowship Programs

KIPP School Leadership Programs have two fellowships for opening a new KIPP school: a yearlong Fisher Fellowship and a two-year Miles Family Fellowship.

Fisher Fellowship

The Fisher Fellowship offers candidates a year-long program that prepares them to design, found, and lead a new KIPP school. The Fisher Fellowship includes intensive summer coursework in an academic setting, residencies at KIPP schools, and individualized coaching from experienced KIPP staff. Learn more >

Miles Family Fellowship

The Miles Family Fellowship provides selected participants with a two-year pathway to leadership at KIPP. Miles Family Fellows receive a year of support and leadership experience while teaching in a KIPP school, and serving in a leadership role (e.g. grade-level chair). After successfully completing the one-year Miles Family Fellowship program, candidates can apply for the year-long Fisher Fellowship in order to prepare them to open a new KIPP school. Learn more >
