The Doris Fisher KIPPster of the Year (KOTY) Award is an annual college scholarship award given to up to six eighth-grade students from KIPP schools across the country. Doris Fisher is a KIPP Foundation co-founder, KIPP Foundation board member, Gap Inc. co-founder and philanthropist. Doris Fisher's family created this award to bestow every year in her honor.
With the KOTY award, KIPP nationally recognizes students that set a superlative bar for what it means to be a KIPPster. Recipients are selected for demonstrated personal and academic excellence and impact on their communities, schools and peers through exceptional practices of leadership and character.
Candidates are nominated by their school leaders, and winners are selected by a committee including a Fisher family member, KIPP founders Mike Feinberg and Dave Levin, and a rotating group of school leaders, a KIPP teacher, and a KIPP college alumna or alumnus.
Thanks to the continued generosity of the Fisher family, each recipient receives $10,000 to be used toward college expenses. The awards are presented to the winners at KIPP School Summit, KIPP's annual national gathering. In addition, each recipient will have their name engraved on a trophy created by the Fishers' family friend and sculptor, Beverly Pepper.
