The annual KIPP Student Leadership Summit provides students from KIPP schools across the nation with the opportunity to come together and participate in two full days of leadership development and teamwork activities. The location varies each year, but is often a natural setting within the context of a true “retreat.”
Throughout the school year, KIPP students are encouraged by their teachers and principals to not only aspire to high academic performance, but to exhibit the type of character and leadership qualities that will empower them to succeed in college and in life. The Student Leadership Summit is held as a way to focus on these areas and provide students with the opportunity to work together-while meeting their fellow KIPPsters from other schools all over the country.
2011 marked the eight annual KIPP Student Leadership Summit at Woodland Christian Campground, Temple, GA. This year 53 of our middle schools took part in the retreat October 20th-23rd. For the first time ever we separated the students from their teachers for one day so, both could benefit from leadership training. The teachers took part in a 6 hour leadership training course provided by Kid Lead in order to return to their schools better equipped to develop even more leaders. While the teachers were learn together the students conquered both the high and low ropes course - facing their fears, building relationships, and problem solving as a team. On the second day at the campground, the teachers and students came back together to participate in a day of activities that provided the teachers a chance to coach and the students a chance to take turns leading their groups.
All activities for the weekend were geared to make sure students could learn about leadership in a variety of ways, including from each other. The two full days of leadership activities challenged students both mentally and physically, and included room for reflection.
