Shannon Stockdale and Stephen Cockrell
Shannon Stockdale and Stephen Cockrell have been friends since they were 16 years old. Shannon and Stephen reflect on the chance-encounter in a Brown University dorm where they first met and the years of friendship that’s followed.
Since then, Shannon has earned a degree in political science from Yale University and a master’s of public administration from the Maxwell School at Syracuse University before joining the KIPP NYC team as Director of Operations in 2011. She now supports the KIPP Foundation as a Director of Talent Strategy, where she helps our schools and regions select, develop, and retain high-quality teachers and leaders. A few years later, Stephen joined her at KIPP as Director of External Impact, where he helps the Foundation share its best practices beyond KIPP, elevate and magnify the alumni voice, and learn from other individuals, organizations, and sectors.
Their story drives home the importance of having someone who truly believes in you, someone who sees your highest self, someone who will honor, encourage, and push you to be better. Despite their diverging paths after that summer, we’re happy they’ve both found a home at KIPP.
Shannon and Stephen’s story was shared during a session focused on storytelling at KIPP School Summit, the annual gathering of the entire KIPP Team and Family to connect, learn, and share with colleagues and friends from across the country.
