Principal Development
Are you a KIPP School Leader in search of opportunities to
engage in high-quality professional learning with your peers and broaden your
network? The KIPP Principal Development Programs seek to improve outcomes for
our students through intense and intentional professional development
opportunities for current KIPP leaders to expand their leadership repertoires.
OVERVIEW
The Principal Development Programs provide our leaders
with a variety of competency-aligned professional learning. This cohort is
comprised of KIPP school leaders and partner leaders, as well as deans,
coaches, chief academic officers, and other instructional leaders. In the past
year, programs have included:
- The KIPP School Leader Retreat — bringing together the
entire KIPP School Leader Community to engage in community building,
reflection, and development. All of the activities are designed for the dual
purpose of strengthening school leaders’ capacity to drive results while
building trusting and critical relationships across the network.
- The Skillful Teacher II Course — designed to build
leaders’ knowledge and skills for improving the practice of their teachers. The
course develops leaders’ capacity to drive results and manage others through
observation, coaching, conferencing, and teaching of adult learners. Leaders
expand their knowledge of effective teaching practices through the study of
current research and video observation of KIPP teachers. Participants also
deliver and receive feedback on their teaching of adult learners.
- The DNA Project — an opportunity for a small group of
leaders who wish to share case studies of ongoing issues in their leadership
and receive concrete and focused feedback and support from peers. Jon Saphier (author of The
Skillful Teacher and founder of Research for Better Teaching) facilitates.
Meetings include spontaneous role-play to help individual leaders rehearse how
to handle particular situations.
Programming changes regularly to meet the needs of KIPP leaders. If
you have suggestions for future Principal Development Programs, please email kslp@kipp.org.
