Miles Family Fellowship

The Miles Family Fellowship is a two-year pathway to found one’s own KIPP school that includes a year of leadership development and experience while teaching in a KIPP school. After successfully completing the first year, participants are invited to apply for the Fisher Fellowship to found and lead a new KIPP school in an underserved community.

OVERVIEW

The Miles Family Fellowship includes:

  • A four-day orientation at the KIPP School Summit in August, 2012, in Orlando, FL
  • Regional and remote leadership development events with other Miles Family Fellows, including three weekend retreats
  • Monthly professional development calls with the Fellowship cohort to share ideas and discuss topics of instruction and leadership
  • Various opportunities to dialogue with noted education experts
  • Monthly check-ins with your host school leader to address your Individualized Leadership Plan (ILP)
  • Ongoing coaching and evaluation by a KIPP Foundation leadership coach to address your Individualized Leadership Plan
  • Two visits to KIPP schools throughout the KIPP Network
  • The Miles Family Fellowship culminates in the spring, with an end-of-year evaluation by your host school leader and leadership coach that helps determine your preparedness to apply for the Fisher Fellowship.

GOALS

The design of the Miles Family Fellowship ensures rigorous, cohort-based leadership development coupled with daily application and practice in leadership roles in KIPP schools. Aligned with the KIPP Leadership Competency Model, Miles Family Fellowship programming is created to empower participants to:

  • Identify and foster instructional excellence through observations, feedback and coaching
  • Collect and analyze data to improve instruction
  • Design and implement school-wide practices that improve teaching and learning
  • Set direction for their team, establish performance goals, and hold teammates accountable for performance
  • Effectively lead team meetings while managing power dynamics and relationships
  • Continuously assess and enhance school culture

DETAILS

Miles Family Fellows receive an annual teacher’s salary from their school, along with a complete benefits package (as determined by the Fellow’s region). Additionally, all travel and lodging expenses (for Miles Family Fellowship events) and coursework is paid for by the KIPP Foundation.
