KIPP Through College programs across the country are developing innovative initiatives for both KIPP students and alumni to gain the essential skills necessary to succeed in college. Here are some examples from four of our KIPP regions.
KIPP HoustonThe KTC program at KIPP Houston is robust and continually innovating to meet student needs. The KTC programs and services at KIPP Houston include: college tours, essay writing workshops, interviewing skills, assistance in completing high school and college applications, help in applying for financial aid and scholarships, maintaining an extensive database of scholarships, and individual college placement counseling. Undoubtedly, the most special part of the program is the KIPP Houston Pennant ceremony. During the winter break of their first semester in college, KIPP students return to a raucous and supportive crowd of more than 5,000 KIPP students and parents who cheer them on while they present their college pennant.

KIPP NYCKTC NYC has developed a unique program, College Scholars, for KIPP students attending higher education institutions in the city. College Scholars provides an academic refuge for students who might be living at home while they work toward a degree. The program, which often serves students who are enrolled at community college or need more preparation before tackling college-level work, offers a quiet study area and tutoring. Besides academic aid, KIPP students receive financial help and educational stipends.

KIPP Bay AreaKIPP Bay Area Schools hosts an Alumni Summit each year, which is a day-long event to promote college readiness/access and college persistence among alumni and eighth graders from the region’s seven schools. Students and alumni can participate in sessions such as transitioning to high school, choosing a college, paying for college, and preparing for community college. A college fair on site provides KIPP students with an opportunity to speak to college admissions representatives. In recent years, this program has drawn up to 150 students and alumni seeking essential college knowledge. In follow-up surveys, 97 percent of participants found their Summit experience to be good or excellent in preparing them for college.

KIPP AustinEvery Wednesday night from 6 to 8 p.m., KIPP Austin hosts Wednesday Night Connections to increase face-to-face contact with alumni. In addition to creating a regular, expected meeting time, it gives KIPP Austin the opportunity to host workshops and events during a time many alumni have already budgeted to spend with KIPP. Wednesday Night Connections provides alumni with the following services: college and scholarship application help, test prep, tutoring and homework help, computer and printer access, financial aid assistance, a supportive alumni community, and workshops (scholarship, essay writing, financial aid, college selection). |
