KIPP connects with Washington decision-makers

The Obama administration’s demonstrated support for school reform, coupled with the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act, provides KIPP with a unique opportunity to further engage in the conversation on what is possible in public education. For the first time, this administration is providing a strong Democratic voice in support of charter schools—and differentiating among charter schools based on a proven track record and results with kids.

Over the past several months, KIPP has begun to make a concerted effort to connect with key decision makers throughout Washington, DC about the policy barriers our network faces. We have held meetings with U.S. Department of Education and White House officials, and Congressional staff members on both sides of the aisle in both the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate.

These meetings have assured that KIPP’s voice in the policy discussion is welcomed and encouraged. Numerous offices have expressed gratitude that KIPP is entering the world of policy and advocacy, as they think that KIPP’s track record and relentless focus on quality will help to push forward the federal interest in replicating high-quality charter networks with results.

Courtney Philips, Government Affairs and Policy Director, is helping to chart the advocacy and policy course for the KIPP Foundation. In addition, she is engaged with the KIPP network on efforts to apply for the Investing in Innovation Fund and the Race to the Top Fund.
