A KIPP school goes to Washington

The Washington D.C. weather forecast for Tuesday, January 20th called for a high of just 29 and as much as ten degrees colder when the wind was blowing. Gathered just outside the mall, the group of 12 middle schoolers and three teachers from KIPP Academy of Opportunity (KAO) in Los Angeles waited hours in this numbing cold to witness the inauguration of Barack Obama.

A future in medicine for Memphis KIPPster

Midway through her junior year at East High School, Varnesha Penix has a full plate of challenging coursework at this “optional school” in Memphis, TN—along with a roster of extracurricular activities that leaves little time for leisure. When she’s not tackling several hours of homework, this KIPP DIAMOND alumna can be found rehearsing with one of the two choirs to which she belongs, dancing with her church’s praise team, or rousing the crowd as a member of the pom-pom squad at school.

Cheshonna Miles is a sixth grade math teacher at KIPP Philadelphia Charter School. In February she took the time to speak with the Foundation about her love of teaching, dancing, and everything in between.

KIPP New Orleans schools thriving

“I think Harvard is best,” said one fifth grader at KIPP Central City Academy in New Orleans as he walked down the stairwell. “No, Emory is better,” his friend replied. “That’s where Mr. Purvis went.”

The two friends discussed the question for a few minutes until one of them ended the debate by saying, “It doesn’t matter—they’re both great. And we’re going to get there, as long as we work hard.”
