JACKSONVILLE, FL — Robert Hawke has been named principal of the first KIPP school to operate in Jacksonville and the state of Florida. GASTON, NC — KIPP Pride High School’s entire senior class—100 percent—earned acceptances to four-year colleges and universities, including Duke University, Howard University, Morehouse College, University of Pennsylvania, Rice University, Swarthmore College, University of Carolina at Chapel Hill, Berklee College of Music, and the University of Virginia. 80 percent of graduates are the first in their families to attend college or university. KIPP PHILADELPHIA SCHOOLS AWARDED $4.6 MILLION FOR GROWTH

PHILADELPHIA, PA — KIPP (Knowledge Is Power Program) Philadelphia Charter School, a free, open-enrollment public charter middle school in North Philadelphia, has been awarded a $4.6 million grant by the Charter School Growth Fund (CSGF.) KIPP Philadelphia will use this investment to expand into a second school in West Philadelphia next year and to partially fund future expansion across the city. WASHINGTON, D.C. — KIPP DC announced today that it will grow to a regional network of 10 schools by 2012 as part of KIPP’s national expansion effort. Mayor Fenty, Chancellor Rhee, the DC Public Charter School Board, Building Hope, and guests joined KIPP DC CEO Susan Schaeffler in an event at KIPP DC’s Benning Road Campus located at 4801 Benning Road, SE in Ward 7. Rainwater Foundation awards KIPP $5.5 million grant to support early childhood education

SAN FRANCISCO, CA — The KIPP (Knowledge Is Power Program) Foundation announces today a $5.5 million gift from the Rainwater Foundation that will allow the charter school network to strengthen and accelerate the growth of its early childhood education program. KIPP Delta awarded $2.6 million for growth

HELENA-WEST HELENA, AR — KIPP (Knowledge Is Power Program) Delta College Preparatory School, a free, open-enrollment public charter middle school in Helena for underserved students, has been awarded a $2.6 million grant by the Charter School Growth Fund (CSGF). KIPP Delta will use this investment to expand from two schools in Helena to 12 schools across the Delta region by 2019. When this expansion is complete, KIPP Delta’s charter schools will send over 240 graduates a year to four-year colleges and universities, nearly double the current number of college bound low-income students in the Delta.

NEW YORK, NY — Today KIPP (Knowledge Is Power Program) announces its record class of Fisher Fellows for 2008-09. The Fisher Fellowship, which prepares aspiring principals to open and run KIPP schools, is an intensive year-long leadership training program. The Fisher Fellows will begin coursework this month in preparation to open 18 new KIPP schools in 2009, the largest number of new schools in KIPP’s history. Read more...

HOUSTON, TX — KIPP Houston High School, the first high school in the KIPP network, announced today that 96 percent of its first graduating class of seniors are headed to four-year colleges and universities. KIPP Houston High School seniors have collectively earned nearly $3 million in scholarships to fund their college tuition and will be attending some of the top colleges in the area and across the country, such as Rice University and Vanderbilt University (located in Nashville, TN). LOS ANGELES, CA — Yesterday afternoon the Los Angeles Unified School District approved the opening of the first KIPP elementary charter school in Los Angeles. The new school, KIPP Raíces Academy, will open on August 11, 2008- several weeks before most children return to school. KIPP Raíces Academy (Raíces means “Roots” in Spanish), to be located in East Los Angeles, will open with a first class of roughly 100 kindergarteners and add one grade each year until it reaches 500 students in kindergarten through fourth grade by 2012. Mathematica to evaluate the impact of KIPP

PRINCETON, NJ — Mathematica Policy Research, Inc., has been awarded a contract of approximately $4 million to evaluate the impact of KIPP. This study represents the driving external research focus for KIPP over the next five years. The Atlantic Philanthropies, an organization dedicated to bringing about lasting changes in the lives of disadvantaged and vulnerable people, provided generous lead funding to make this research possible. The five-year study will examine the impacts of KIPP middle schools on student achievement and other outcomes, how these outcomes compare with students at other schools, and whether the performance of KIPP students indicates that they are on a path toward college. First KIPP school in Twin Cities secures historic building to educate underserved students

MINNEAPOLIS, MN — The KIPP Minnesota Board of Directors announced today that KIPP Stand Academy will open in August 2008. The school will be located at 1601 Laurel Street in the Basilica School Building, behind the Basilica of St. Mary. LOS ANGELES, CA — The charter school movement in Los Angeles received a $23.3 million boost today from The Eli and Edythe Broad Foundation through new grants to three leading charter school organizations: KIPP (Knowledge Is Power Program), Aspire Public Schools and Pacific Charter School Development, Inc. NEWARK, NJ — Doris and Donald Fisher, founders of Gap Inc., and Michael L. Lomax, Ph.D., president and C.E.O. of the United Negro College Fund, will visit a fifth grade class at Rise Academy, a KIPP school, in Newark on Monday. Newark Mayor Cory Booker will join the guests for the school visit. NEW ORLEANS - A year after Hurricane Katrina, The Broad Foundation and the U.S. Fund for UNICEF announced today a total of $2.45 million to fund two current and three planned KIPP (Knowledge Is Power Program) public charter schools in New Orleans. Based on a model that has improved achievement for students across 16 states and last year raised student achievement for New Orleans evacuees on average more than two grade levels in reading and math, the five KIPP New Orleans schools aim to eventually serve more than 2,400 students.
