Work hard. Be nice.

One of the first things that students learn at KIPP schools is the year they will enroll in college. To date, nearly 80 percent of KIPP students who have completed the eighth grade in KIPP schools have enrolled in college.

To help all KIPP students climb the mountain to college, we are focused on placing our students in college preparatory high schools, increasing the supply of quality public high schools, and supporting these students through their high school and college years.

High School Placement

Historically, KIPP alumni have enrolled in some of the top public, private, and boarding high schools in the country. This year, 93 percent of KIPP eighth grade alumni entered high-quality, college-preparatory high schools. Since students have begun matriculating to high school, KIPP alumni have earned over $21 million in high school scholarships.

KIPP High Schools

As more KIPP middle schools have reached maturity and sent eighth grade students on to high school, we have recognized a need for more rigorous high schools in many communities so that all KIPP alumni can stay focused on college. To that end, KIPP has begun creating rigorous, college-preparatory high schools as extensions of our existing middle schools.

Through the support of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, KIPP has opened two high schools in Gaston, NC, and Houston, TX. In 2007, new KIPP high schools opened in Newark, NJ; San Lorenzo, CA; and Helena, AR.

KIPP To College

As part of our mission to ensure that students matriculate to and graduate from college, KIPP continues to support students after they leave KIPP middle schools through the KIPP to College alumni program. The KIPP to College program aims to empower each eighth grade graduate to continue using the scholarly habits, knowledge, and skills learned at KIPP schools as they continue onto high school, college, and beyond. Components of the program include:

  • Extended support and mentoring for students and their families;
  • Academic support services and programs;
  • College and financial aid counseling;
  • Extracurricular activities;
  • Summer internships, job placement, and other leadership and enrichment opportunities.
